This lampshade was the first thing I made from EDM wire.

The very first thing I made from EDM wire was a lampshade. Many months of experimentation gave me a better understanding of this material’s unique properties, which led to the development of the stitching, weaving and knot-tying techniques I use for various shapes. I went through a similar but much shorter process for figuring out a system for working with heavier, copper-plated MIG welding wire. The use of MIG wire has allowed me to scale-up some of the shapes I originally made with EDM wire, but it also offers a different look and texture, due to its thickness. Best of all, large pieces made from MIG wire can be powdercoated for strength and durability, making them perfect for outdoor use, like the giant street lamp I recently finished for the Whiski Kitchen Design Studio.
